The IBM Watson AI XPRIZE is a four-year, $5 Million (USD), open and global competition, challenging teams to develop and demonstrate how humans can collaborate with powerful AI technologies to tackle the world’s grand challenges.
The prize aims to accelerate adoption of AI technologies, and spark creative, innovative and audacious demonstrations of the technology that are truly scalable and solve societal grand challenges.

Following a generous donation by Concordia University, District 3 has decided to invest in our city’s artificial intelligence startup community.
The AI XPRIZE challenge is a fitting initiative for this effort considering three things:
Reputable AI research labs, such as such as UdeM Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms (MILA) andMcGill Reasoning and Learning Lab. The city must build upon those to ensure it has a strong presence in the AI International scene beyond research, so in education, entrepreneurship, and industry adoption as well.

The program has cultivated a pool of partners who will work with teams to help them secure R&D grant funding and financing to further advance their projects.
AIfred is a clinical decision aid system for psychiatry. AIfred combines deep scientific research with cutting-edge machine learning to help reduce recovery times, increase treatment efficacy and allow better allocation of medical resources through more effective and efficient treatment plans.
To take care of an apiary, one has to be able to understand their bees and their needs. Nectar uses artificial intelligence to offer a solution that will provide beekeepers and farmers data-driven insights to know precisely what’s going on in their hives and what the honey bees need to thrive. Coupling a clever monitoring device and a user-friendly chatbot system, Nectar is poised to become the company that enables communication between farmers and pollinators.
Sensequake is developing intelligent software that use sensor data collected from structures to analyze and predict structural behaviour. Recent developments in sensor technologies, cloud, and artificial intelligence are leveraged.
InnoVie Health Inc
InnoVie Health Inc. will be providing physicians with an AI clinical decision support (CDS) tool, integrated with EHR, to improve the diagnostic accuracy and test/treatment selection for a patient. The platform will be initially developed in the area of cardiovascular disease. Integrations with EHR, telemedicine and the patient portal can further facilitate the development of long distance care and serve to better educate patients regarding their health status. As a result, not only can this improve patient compliance, but also deliver the most personalized form of medicine to each patient.

This is done by matching students, in real-time, with available tutors that have shown proficiency in the same subject. As a result, the student will have a better understanding of the topic, while the tutor will reach the tutoring level of a professional.

Canadian Shield Military and Veteran Student Services (Canadian Shield MVSS) is a Federally Incorporated non-profit Corporation that is developing a Cognitive Computing based Veteran Transition Ecosystem to support former Canadian Armed Forces and RCMP members by providing a seamless end-to-end progression through the series of steps required to secure gainful civilian employment and meaningful participation in their new communities following a service related injury.
Birth asphyxia and other breathing-related conditions cause over 1.2 million newborn deaths annually. Current diagnostic methods are too sophisticated in terms of both equipment and required expertise, making robust detection of asphyxia in newborns difficult for nearly half of the world. Ubenwa is an AI that enables diagnosis of asphyxia through automated analysis of the infant cry. Deployed via smartphone and wearable technology, Ubenwa will drastically reduce the time, cost and skill required to make correct diagnoses.
Cann Forecast is building a revolutionary Artificial intelligence system called JENN. JENN is an AI based assistant capable of predicting the risk of microbiological contamination in water. Along with data provided by the cities, it also makes use of meteorological and environmental data in order to predict the risk of contamination up to 3 days ahead not only for recreational water, but also for drinking water sources.
JENN also comes with a graphical user interface so that decision makers can visualize the system’s predicted and historical data, along with performance metrics and confidence intervals so they can make more enlightened decisions.An API is also available for data access and integration with systems already in place.
AICARE aim to develop an intelligent application programming interface (API) that will receive real-time traffic video feed and any other data/information that could help improve traffic flow. A web platform is the fastest way to reach our potential users over the world. Once the data comes to that API, it will be processed by an intelligent agent able to return to traffic light controllers the optimal cycles of green light versus red light. By the end of the competition, their goal is to improve traffic reality in at least three cities
