Lab technologist Mandate
The Lab technologist works with all the internal and external stakeholders of District 3 to support or give technical assistance while helping on the animation of the hardware ecosystem through different activities. The Lab Technologist is responsible for overseeing the day to day operation of the Design lab and the maintenance of the equipment within the lab. Additionally, they will supervise and advise staff, startups and community members on technical assistance

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Technical advisor
Serve as a technical advisor to community members in developing prototypes, services and products
During the lab opening hours, the Design technologist assists community members in their prototyping processes: from training them to use specific equipment (Laser cutter, 3D printer, CAD software, among others) to guiding them to relevant and safe techniques, appropriate materials and external resources and/or suppliers
Lead the development of event initiatives to fuel our community demand generation efforts and improve the overall experience of the lab

Lab administration
Ensure that equipment and software in the lab is properly maintained and in optimal working condition
Repair certain equipments as needed, manage and maintain inventory of tools and consumable materials for community members

Partnership and Community Animation

Work with the space manager, marketing and design teams to create and organize events
Leverage existing external relationships and cultivate new contacts in order to create events, workshops and design lab activities; recording and documenting them
Monitor, analyze and communicate animation results on a quarterly basis
Explore and develop opportunities for future collaborations with existing and new partnerships on an ongoing basis
Maintain a keen understanding of industry trends and make appropriate recommendations regarding the lab and events
Manage & upkeep the overall partnership outreach list

Education & Experience Required
DEP and/or Cegep degree in a relevant area
Good understanding of safety regulations in the context of a prototyping lab
Experience with conception, ideation, and iterative prototyping. Manufacturing experience considered an asset.
Strong 3D modelling and physical model making skills
Experience with multiple 3D modelling software systems (3D studio Max, Rhino and Solidworks) and vector drawing softwares. Must be flexible to training for new skill sets and skills enhancements.
Ability to engage and interact with community members to determine their digital, design and technology needs.
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Self-starter and able to build new relationships with different stakeholders
Understanding of a holistic and human centered approach to product and service design, from research and insight generation to concept to deliverable.
Able to function, adapt and succeed in a constantly changing, fast paced environment within a self-directed culture and navigate ambiguity
Understands emerging technologies and at ease using web technologies
