Communications Specialist Mandate
The communications specialist works with the Marketing and Communications team in developing communication efforts, including research analysis and recommendations for media outreach. The specialist produces reports and articles, develops content initiatives, as well as tracks media coverage, analyzes results, and makes recommendations to increase District 3’s visibility in the innovation ecosystem.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

– Create original content, including articles, blog posts, web copy, video, and more
– Lead the development of content initiatives to fuel our demand generation efforts
– Write and produce various types of articles on a wide range of topics
– Reimagine content pieces in various formats
– Research background facts necessary to support short-form and long-form content projects
– Ensure all content reflects District 3’s brand personality and is consistent in terms of style, quality, and tone of voice
– Proofread/edit content created by team and community members to adhere to District 3’s voice
– Analyze content marketing results on a regular basis to create content that will entice sharing, drive traffic, attract links and new followers, as well as help drive qualified leads

– Develop media relations strategy, including coordinating with digital and social media channels
– Coordinate public relations activities
– Leverage existing media relationships and cultivate new contacts
– Manage media inquiries and interview requests
– Monitor, analyze and communicate PR results on a quarterly basis
– Develop opportunities for partnerships on an ongoing basis
– Maintain a keen understanding of industry trends and make appropriate recommendations regarding communication strategy surrounding them
– Manage & upkeep the overall PR outreach list

– Website copywriting, proofing, and updating as needed
– Monitoring news in the ecosystem and development from our startups
– Developing, editing and proofreading print and presentation marketing materials

Education & Experience Required
– Undergraduate degree in journalism, communications or another relevant discipline
– 2+ years of relevant experience in communications
– Experience in producing material for publication and in developing story ideas to pitch to the media
– Working knowledge of WordPress
– Working knowledge of design tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro
– Experience producing video content a major asset
– Strong interest in entrepreneurship, startups, and emerging technologies
– Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills in English; French is an asset
– Ability to take initiative, employ good judgment, and manage projects from beginning to end
– Understands emerging platforms and digital media
– Exceptional ability to manage details
– Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
– Ability to meet deadlines and to anticipate next steps or needs
– Work effectively both independently and as part of a team
– Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
